Welcome To Harley Davidson Accessories Guide blog.
Third party mufflers,
exhaust systems and air cleaner are one of the biggest selling accessories in
the aftermarket business. Riders
installed not when these said pieces are old, rusty and useless. They install
them when their bikes are brand new.
They are after that window-rattling sound
of loud pipes not because they want to make their Harley Davidson 883 faster,
more powerful but they want it to be louder. Maybe some riders believe that
loud pipes save lives or they just crave for attention shouting to other people
in the next lane “hey look at me I am
loud.”
If safety is an issue,
then loud pipes are not it. Riders would
rather opt for wearing a full face Harley Davidson helmet or high
visibility goggles. A hearing impaired and distracted driver is more in danger
when they can’t hear what’s going on around them. If only motorcycles travel
smooth with less decibels then it would be less irritating to other
motorists. Irritating certainly is not
synonymous with looking cool.
Be heard or be seen?
There are a few riders
though who do believe that you have to be heard first than seen. They are
afraid some car would just zip around them or pull out right in front or pull
right into your lane. Other motorist generally won’t care and wont think you as
a threat to them.
People have yet to see
riders being arrested because of excessive noise. All new motorcycles must meet EPA standards.
It is not a misdemeanor but a federal
law offense if you tamper with the pipes just to make it louder.
There are no official
data that can prove this baloney of loud pipes saving lives. However there are
statistics that a good percentage of motorists can’t hear emergency vehicles with screaming sirens coming right up their
lanes.
Can excessive noise save lives?
So do you think riders
with loud exhaust systems are inconsiderate outlaws, desperately in need of
attention who wants to make up for their lack in tree pulling horsepower with
excessive noise?
Harley Davidson bikes
straight from the manufacturer’s site is quiet in fact. The stock ones have
more likely with an “80 decibels” label on the side of them. Maybe some people mistook the excessively, annoying
loud for a Harley when in fact it is a cloned Japanese bike. Go try and check
it yourself. Stock pipes are actually pleasant and but Riders who want to make
a statement just change the silencers and buy extremely noisy exhausts.
Harley Sportsters with
loud pipes can get away it.
Why?
Because they are street
machines and the loud noise meant “Freedom on the open road.” Harley riders are
thought of as protected class that’s why they can get away with it. Well, some.
